Daire Gilmartin, Psychologist in Five Rivers is recruiting for his Doctoral research study: Experiences of Psychotherapy while in Foster Care: Adolescent perspectives.

The study aims to gain an understanding of what young people in foster care think and feel about their experience of psychotherapy/counselling with a view to improving psychotherapy/counselling services for young people in care.

It is an important area to research as young people in foster care frequently find it difficult to attend and engage in psychotherapy. When they attend, they often do not receive suitable and relevant psychotherapy support, while professionals struggle to know how to best engage with them and appropriately attend to their therapeutic needs.

All help would be greatly appreciated!!

Participant requirements:

1. Aged 12-18 years, be attending psychotherapy or have attended psychotherapy within the previous twelve months.
2. Attended a minimum of 6 sessions in that time
3. Are in their current foster placement for a minimum of 12 months and there are no current plans for this to change.
4. Have not met Daire previously for therapy.

Participants would be asked to meet with Daire for an interview of approximately 60 minutes.

If you know a young person who fits the criteria and are interested in taking part, or would like more information about this project, please contact Daire at daire.gilmartin3@mail.dcu.ie or daire.gilmartin@fiveriversireland.ie
